M anhattan A rea R etired E ducators A ssociation MAREA Manhattan, Kansas MAREA Activities What Is MAREA ? The M anhattan A rea R etired E ducators A ssociation (MAREA) is a social organization primarily helping retired educators keep in touch with each other and helping them to stay current with relevant community, national and legislative events. Most of this is done through monthly meetings from September through May of each year. (More on meetings .) Visitors are welcome anytime! Picture compliments of USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden The MAREA unit was established in 1962 under the name M anhattan A rea R etired T eachers A ssociation (MARTA). From the beginning the organization has been affiliated with state and national retired school personnel organizations. (More on the area represented by MAREA and its affiliations .) What MAREA Does Provides a way to maintain contact with individuals having common interests and backgrounds. Helps to inform members of available privileges, opportunities, and services for retirees. It also warns members about scams and identity theft schemes. Offers several scholarships each year to promising area high school seniors wanting to further their education. Promotes legislation supporting education, educators, and a better quality of life for all individuals. Assists members wanting to participate in, or to initiate, community service programs. Offers avenues to support advancement of education through affiliated state and national organizations. State dues provide, among other things, a dedicated voice in the Kansas legislature speaking for retired school personnel. MAREA unit dues support the monthly meetings, an annual yearbook, and a semiannual newsletter. They also contribute to our scholarship awards and to the costs of distributing information of interest to retired educators.
